It is a shame loosing precision at every plug-in stage.
Yes, sure. But I do wonder if this is more of a theoretical
concern than
a practical one.
The input/output/storage format is 24 bit these days.
Requantizing to 24 bit for every plugin can't be a good thing and I
imagine
it is audible with the right signals/monitoring.
If your concern is that 24 significant bits isn't enough, then don't
forget that you can also use 32 bit integer samples with Core Audio.
Since you're either clamping or normalising your output to the range
+/- 1 anyway (you are, aren't you?), then this gives you more
precision without sacrificing anything.
The nice thing is that this works perfectly well with Apple Audio
Toolbox stuff as it stands now, so you don't need to depend on having
special AUs lying around, as you would with double precision samples.
My additive synth uses 32 bit integers as its internal sample format,
and for a while it was the only output format it supported, too.
Never gave CoreAudio any problems.
