DLSMusicDevice and SoundFont compatibility

Is it accurate to say that the DLSMusicDevice is only compatible with the SF 2.1 spec and not the later SF 2.4 spec? And by extension, that it doesn't support the newer 24 bit audio capabilities that are part of 2.4?
