AURemoteIO returning an error on AudioOutputUnitStart

Gentlemen-

Running the iPhone OS 2.2.1. Working with notifications for when the audio route changes (property callbacks). Am attempting to start and stop the input audio stream accordingly.

What would cause this call:

err = AudioOutputUnitStart(audioUnit)

when called on a RemoteIO unit set up as an input to return this error:

560030580 ('!act')

and print this in the log?

AUIOClient_StartIO failed (560030580)

Additionally, what is the '!act' error, and why isn't this found in the documentation anywhere? Thanks for any insight.
