-1 error when instantiating AU component

Hello,

Does anyone know why I am receiving a -1 error when attempting to instantiate an audio unit component (music device)? This occurs only with one particular unit after making a call to one of the "open component" functions or to AUGraphOpen(). I am not even sure I understand what this error means in this context. The unit opens with no apparent problem in GarageBand, AULab or Finale 2009.
