thanks for pointing me to OSC, I'll have a look if it could be useful
for the communication part.
However, regarding the DAW, I will have to stay compatible with
current studio standards, i.e. my users already work with Apple Logic,
Ableton Live, Pro Tools, DP and such. A typical use case for the
application is to compose an orchestral arrangement from scratch that
accompanies a vocal recording or video soundtrack held in the DAW.
Those "virtual fingers" play the instruments (MIDI notes being
generated) according to high-level directions by the composer. That
ranges from a single piano to a complete symphonic orchestra.
