Thanks for the quick response. I'm not quite sure what you mean by leaving the responsibility to the user. If I'm building a VoIP-like application, and I want to allow the user to use the speakerphone (just like Apple or any other phone manufacturer let's you do that in normal phone time), how do I make sure I'm not picking up the echo?

Usually, users know better than to create a feedback loop
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Feedback). Usually, this is fixed either
by not playing back what you're recording or wearing headphones.
Check out any DAW like Protools, GarageBand or Logic to see how they
deal with this.
