Your iMac was connected to a wall socket.
Sure, software MP3 decoding would drain the battery faster. But that
should be a trade-off for app developers to make, right?
Not being able to overlay two MP3s is kind of a problem for certain
types of apps, like DJ controllers. Note that in this case the total
time spent decoding two streams at once is usually not very large*,
so it wouldn't hurt battery life too much.
