It doesn't have to be a chicken-and-egg situation because Audio MIDI
Setup supports direct monitoring with the "Thru" button. I'm sure
that AULab also supports this in the correct way. So it's really
just a matter of asking audio interface companies to implement the
feature in their driver if the hardware actually supports it.
That said, I haven't done a survey of interfaces recently. The MIO
hardware is capable of this, but the settings are so flexible that
working in a simple switch might be more trouble than it's worth. I
think perhaps most audio interface vendors expect users to work with
the custom UI for their interface because it presents richer
capabilities. As users, we probably need to urge them to provide
both where possible. I do know that MOTU interfaces can do direct
monitoring within Digital Performer, and it's even done in a way that
is hidden from their other custom UI applications. If they can do
that, then they should be able to expose this as a CoreAudio feature.
