It may or may not do what you want, but GarageBand's AppleScript
dictionary includes the verb renderPreview. The documentation says it
renders an iLife preview, which I assume is a low-fi audio file, but
in order to do that, it presumably has to render the whole project
anyway.
Of course, trying to send AppleScript commands from an app to itself
may be injurious to your health....
