.caf and iTunes

I recently switched over to .caf as my default audio format to resolve the file size limitations of .AIF format. However now I am noticing that iTunes cannot even open a simple .caf file. This is a major shortcoming. Is iTunes expected to be able to open Apple's own format some time soon?
