If you are on the desktop, you can use another process to play the
stream for you. For example, your app could invoke a command line tool
to run in the background and play your stream. Alternately, your app
could use AppleScript to tell iTunes to play the stream. And so forth.
There are lots of options here.
On the phone, I don't think you have any options. I think your app has
to be alive for any streams you want to play to keep playing.
