iPhone recording gain (RemoteIO)

Can anyone confirm whether there is a way to set the recording gain on
the iPhone/iTouch? I am using the RemoteIO to record raw audio samples,
and the signal is often quite low (< 50% of full dynamic range
available). Specifically, does the A/D hardware have an automatic gain
control circuit or is the input gain hardcoded to some nominal value?

I see that the VoiceProcessorIO unit has a property called
"kAUVoiceIOProperty_VoiceProcessingEnableAGC". Does this property also
apply to the RemoteIO? Is the AGC implemented in software or hardware?
Any information would be greatly appreciated, as the documentation does
not specify anything about setting the recording gain.

Thanks,
Zach
