CoreMIDI connect to instrument help

I'm trying to connect to a midi instrument [via usb] to receive the raw midi data that the instrument outputs. The instrument works with my snow leopard mac [i see that it's been set up correctly and works in other applications.] I want to be able to connect to the instrument and then write out a midi file or anything really. I'm just trying to get connected, but after reading CoreAudio.pdf and MIDIServices.h I still have no idea how to do this. Oh I'm trying to do this in C too. If i could get a link to some other documentation, or a simple tutorial that would be great. Any help is greatly appreciated.
