The VU spec is very simple, and predates the IEC. Heck it predates just about everything! It is in the public domain.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VU_meter

Using a 1kHz tone of +3dB on the meter (full scale), the meter must reach 99% full-scale deflection in 300 ms and overshoot not less than 1% and not more than 1.5%. The fall time is identical. Off the top of my head, a two-pole lowpass filter with a moderate Q (just over 0.7) should do the trick.

Kind Regards,

Hey all,

I'm setting out to write a level meter that closely matches VU meter ballistics, and I'm not finding much via google. Before I break down and buy the IEC spec, I wanted to see if anyone had already reinvented this wheel.
