AAC encoding

From what i have read...On the iPhone 3gs we have a hardware AAC encoder.

Would i be correct in saying that this does not exist on the older models?

Is there a system supplied encoder that runs in software on these models? (I.e extAudioFile )

Is this the kind of operation one can perform in real time from a render callback?

Thanks
