we do it in a way that was hashed out on this list on multiple
occasions, but most recently in the winter of 09/10. i don't expect
people to read source code in response to a query i post on a mailing
list, but it is all out there if anyone wants to read it (given that
ardour and mixbus are GPL'ed).
