The documentation here is misleading.
As has been discussed several times on this email thread, the optical
connection can only carry stereo lpcm (uncompressed) audio or
compressed 5.1 audio. So this statement cannot be correct:
• Supports uncompressed 5.1 channel audio such as LPCM
given their previous statements:
• Input Audio Signal: Apple® Mini Jack
• USB does not support analog audio signal
(One other point of confusion, USB is a digital interface, so NO usb
cable can carry an "analog audio signal")
I think what you will find from this cable is that that it has the
same feature set as we've been discussing previously:
Stereo lpcm audio
Encoded (DD, DTS) surround audio.
If they were to use the USB cable to carry audio, then that would be a
different story. Their web site is very confusing.
This is what Apple would consider to be a "3rd party opportunity".
As you feel so strongly about this, I would recommend that you contact
this company and the previous one, and describe to them your needs.
Perhaps they will understand at that point.

Hi again,
After the disappointment of only getting stereo with the Monoprice
adaptor, I had another look and discovered some other offerings from
a company called Kanex
The most interesting one is this:
Kanex iAdapt 51 Mini DisplayPort to HDMI w/ 5.1 Channel Digital Audio
http://www.kanexlive.com/products/item.aspx?id=3495
It says
# Supports uncompressed 5.1 channel audio such as LPCM
# Supports compressed 5.1 channel audio such as DTS Digital, Dolby
Digital
It's using the digital optical link to transmit the audio (and
specifically mentions that the USB plug is not for the audio - just
for providing the power).
Anybody managed to test one? What does the LPCM mode offer?

Hi
For those of you who were wondering what happens when one of
Monoprice's
MiniDisplay Port+ USB to HDMI connectors is used to connect a
MacBook Pro
to a Home Theatre amplifier, I now know the answer, having ordered
one and
had to pay a hefty charge to get it through customs here in France.

It just appears in Audio Midi Setup as a "USB Sound Device" with
0in/2out
and 2ch-16bit as the only option. You can choose between 44.1 and
48Khz.
That's it.... :-(
Oh, it sounds like nice quality stereo, and the Image on my flat
screen TV
looks good at 1920*1080 pixels, but I'm disappointed that the audio
interface is so uninteresting.
HDMI based
audio communication is the future. I'm sure it's not beyond Apple's
engineers to come up with a MiniDisplay+USB -> HMDI that does it
properly....(or someone else?)
seems like whoever manufactured the current interface needs to hear
back from users that it is not quite there yet.
Bill
Yours hopefully....
