i am not totally sure about DSSI, but LADSPA and LV2 (LADSPA v2) are
platform independent. LADSPA doesn't really correspond to the level of
"sophistication" that VST or AU represent, primarily because it
doesn't say anything about GUIs (the host is responsible for providing
them, always). LV2 has an extension mechanism which means that in
theory, it can do pretty much anything at all as long as the plugin &
host both support a given extension. the CALF and recently LinuxDSP
plugins (the latter are closed source, linux-only) demonstrate what
can be done with LV2.

obviously, LADSPA and LV2 work fine in the context of a CoreAudio
host, but are not supported by any of the "traditional" OS X audio
applications that i am aware of.
