Hum… I guess you mean before the CoreAudio SDK update in SnowLeopard.
Now, classes are in /Developer/Extras/CoreAudio and sample codes are online only.
Maybe the SampleDriverPlugIn (http://developer.apple.com/mac/library/samplecode/SampleDriverPlugIn/ ) is what you want (it was updated for 10.6)
The SampleHardwarePlugin is another HAL related sample code ( http://developer.apple.com/Mac/library/samplecode/SampleHardwarePlugIn/index.html ).
