The iOS MediaPlayer.framework has never supported any kind of writability (changing item metadata, adding playlists, deleting anything, etc.), so it seems like there's a blanket philosophical resistance to what you want to do. File a feature request at bugreport.apple.com, I guess?
I'm still surprised we can get to an item's audio data in iOS 4, even though we have to go through AV Foundation to do so.
