kAudioDevicePropertyHogMode disables volume keys on mbp keyboard

I'm getting in and out of kAudioDevicePropertyHogMode properly at this point and everything's behaving nicely, except one thing: the volume keys on my keyboard don't do anything while in this mode. Once I exit the mode they work fine again.

Those key events cannot be trapped as far as I can tell; otherwise I would just handle it internally myself.

Anyone know how to get the volume keys working again while in kAudioDevicePropertyHogMode?
