Hi,
Back in february we had an exchange concerning
the possibility of outputting 8 channels of 24bit
96KHz uncompressed sound via the Mini Display
Port of the latest iMacs, by using one of the
miniport to HDMI connectors that are marketed by
Griffin
http://www.griffintechnology.com/products/video-display-converter.
If I understand correctly, this ability is shared
by the three new MacBook Pro models that have
recently been released. Has anyone tested this?
What does a home theatre amplifier look like from
the Audio Midi Setup utility?
There's also a new 13" Macbook. Does the Mini
Display port on that also allow Audio output to
HDMI? I can't find any mention of this on the
Apple Website.
I imagine that the MiniDisplay Port on the latest
Mini Macs won't work - is that correct? Again, no
sign of specific info on the website.
Any hope that some kind person at Apple or
elsewhere will market a DisplayPort -> HDMI
connector that has an additional USB connector to
allow multichannel audio throughpout via HDMI
that could be used with the millions of Mac users
that are not fortunate enough to have bought a
mac in the last few months.
Apple is so close to having the technology
available to allow all Mac users to listen to
full high resolution 7.1 channel audio through a
home theatre amplifier using just a $39 adapter
and an HDMI cable....
Please make it so that everyone can benefit...

One point to clarify here.
This is true (that you can get audio through
this connection) only on Mac models that support
audio via the DP plug. At this point, that is
the most recent iMac. Other models (Mac books,
etc) only support video over the DP plug.
Sorry if I caused any confusion

The DisplayPort connector on these iMacs is capable (through an

Griffin technologies provide an adaptor to adapt the display port
connection to HDMI, and once you plug this in, and then hook up a
receiver on the other end of the HDMI cable.

Now, HDMI is driven by an EDID (a descriptor that describes the
capabilities of a given device). So, what you will see in AMS (Audio
MIDI Setup) ***once you plug a receiver in*** is the capabilities of
that receiver. Some of the older HDMI receivers are only able to do 2
channels of linear pcm audio over HDMI, so that is all you will see.
If your receiver can do mutli-channel linear pcm over HDMI, then AMS
will show that to you.
Once this is there, this then behaves like any audio device you have
plugged in to your Mac. That is, any application (iTunes, etc), any
game, can output audio to that receiver up to the number of channels
it supports.
So, I think this is the one cable solution you are looking for.
