Communication across AUs

Hi,

is there a way for AUs to communicate with each other? The panner I
need to implement outputs 16 channels, and since most hosts (or even
AUs themselves?) only support 8 busses per track, I need to split the
AU up into two separate plug-ins. But if those two AUs can't
communicate with each other, certain pans will obviously not be
possible. What I'm imagining is to have a "Master AU" that implements
the entire interface and also outputs the first 8 channels. The "Slave
AU" is inserted on the next track; it has the same input as the Master
AU. The Slave then gets the necessary parameters from the Master,
calculates the necessary coefficients for the other 8 channels, and
outputs them.

Would something like that be possible?

Thanks,
Alex
