Remote AU Slots

Hello everyone,

for my current project I am looking for a solution to host a single AU instrument inside another AU. The inner AU is supposed to be loaded, configured, and unloaded by means of network calls ("remote controlled"), while the outer AU remains mounted in a DAW (Logic for instance).

The goal is to put an external application into full control over the instruments being used in the host and feed them with MIDI in near real-time. Basically it's a network API that turns any AU host into a general purpose audio server.

The questions that arise are:

(1) Will the typical host tolerate this switching "under the hood"?

(2) My plan is to forward most the CoreAudio API directly to the inner AU. Is that a naive assumption?

(3) Does an AU have access to global transport time (location)? Would be required to properly timestamp MIDI.

(4) Is there any code base available I could start from?

Any pointers and hints are much appreciated. If someone might be interested in a collaboration, please contact me off list.

Thanks!

Andre
