can an AU have a dynamic parameter list? it appears to me that it could publish an event notifying of a change in the value of kAudioUnitProperty_ParameterList, and that the host should/could then get the value of that property, and re-inquire about the current parameters. is that legal? Are there any hosts that would pay attention to this?

It's legal but very few hosts do it in my experience which is a shame (well, 12 months ago there weren't many). AULab does and I've seen hosts that listen for changes but only update the parameter name and not the value range (or the other way round) etc. Maybe things have improved but I haven't pursued this avenue recently. Would be encouraging if at least one host performed this kind of thing well.
