I wish I personally had more knowledge about the kernel. Snapz for example somehow records system audio (using a kext) completely transparently, and it actually works. My guess is that it just pokes around internally to find the selected output device and tap into its buffer and copies the data out of it. I am far too unfamiliar with the kernel to make that work, and DTS wouldn't help.
