'If you wish to play, you must first learn to sing.'
Frédéric François Chopin
Hello Core-Audio people!
I'm very excited to join this list. As I'm going to be working very closely with the iOS audio subsystem, I'd like to touch base and say hello!
The iPad isn't just something new in the world of computing. It also allows new ground to be broken in other fields. Especially music!
This is what has brought me into iPhone development: Music education at school (Father Charles Goes Down And Ends Battle etc) really did my head in. It created in me and an aversion to musical theory, and the great rift arose between my innate desire for musical _expression_, and my phobia of this ugly representation. So I started to develop an alternative that was more palatable:
www.toneme.org
I developed a system that works with the 12 pitch classes that has now been standard for over 150 years (
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Equal_temperament). (In comparison, the existing system works with an infinitude of pitch classes that derives from the Pythagorean tuning system).
I associated colour and phoneme to each. (*) I extended the system to incorporate the concept of tonal centre, and to express each of these pitch classes relative to the established tonal centre.
(*) it is a problem with existing musical teaching that we associate various pitch classes with nothing more concrete than a letter 'A', 'Bb', etc. These letters are themselves very abstract and intangible. This has the result that people develop musical ability without the ability to relate these musical patterns to a physical instrument. (ie it is far easier to hum three blind mice than to go 'E D C _ E D C _ G F FE _ ...'
And it is this work that has brought me to the world of iPhone development. That's why I'm writing now!
I have already knocked out half a dozen very interesting musical concepts, including:
- the 12 pitch classes arranged chromatically in a circle as Shepard Tones (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shepard_tone), giving the illusion that one is continually ascending or descending.
- major chords arranged in a circle as cycle of fifths, with relative minors forming an inner circle
- a resonator, which resonates if you sing a particular note (much as a guitars G string resonates if you sing a G into the guitar)
I don't want to spill the really good stuff quite yet ;)
I am currently focusing on a perfect pitch trainer, and a trainer for my developed musical system.
Well, if you're still reading, then maybe this is of some interest to you as well...
I am striking a note to listen for resonance. If anyone reading this is interested in contributing to this effort (or even assimilating me into a related venture), please write to me!
I am looking to somehow team up, as (while there are a few lone rangers that make it) this is obviously a winning strategy. There is a lot of work in any software product. Also a team has a buzz to it. It is fun. Motivating.
My vision is a single software product that instills and reinforces a robust musical basis in the brain of an child or adult, through games and exercises that are fun and addictive. This system will work on the principles by which our brains learn (association, reward mechanism, etc)
I face an additional difficulty in that I have severe RSI, which places heavy limits on my productivity. I also have dwindling money reserves; I am looking for a sponsor / backer / investor. without assistance I will soon have to put focus into a day job, which will leave me with little energy to pursue this project. And I would like to leave something beautiful behind from this life...
If any of this is of interest to you, or if you can help in some way, please do drop me a line! You can reach me at:

Om Shanti
