By reading the audio data via a user-kernel API done by sysctls. You allocate memory in usermode, then ask the driver to fill it in. This is also the synchronization mechanism by which the driver reports the sample rate, so you won't need a SRC.

Hmm.. let me elaborate with an example :

iTunes --> my audio device --(private API)--> my filtering application --> target sound device
