AudioOutputUnit Timestamp Question

Is the host time in the audio timestamp given to the input callback of an AudioOutputUnit always going to be valid and set? If it's not, I don't know how I would use AudioDeviceTranslateTime to set it. Or even if I would, because there's no associated device?
