How can I get transport status?

Hi,
I want to change my AU plugins's GUI display corresponding to transport start/stop status on Logic 9.
I know I can get current transport status from host callbacks,
But this callbacks can only be used in the AudioUnitRender call.
What I want to do is to get the status of transport even if AudioUnitRender is not called.
For example, on an empty audio track, if I try to play the track, I would like to know the status of the transport.
Can any one help me with my problem?
