AudioHardwareGetProperty basic question

Hi list. CA noob here.
I'm having trouble getting an array of my available interface's AudioDeviceIDs from audiohardwaregetproperty using
AudioHardwareGetProperty(kAudioHardwarePropertyDevices...
I think i'm incorrectly allocating the array to receive the IDs...Could someone enlighten me on how to achieve this basic task? should I be using AudioObjectGetPropertyData() for this instead as mentioned in AudioHardware.h?
