MatrixMixer - handling a lot of inputs

Just looking for some clarification on the functionality of the MatrixMixer.  In my program I am going to have a variable number of inputs (buses) in the mixer with a variable number of channels.  Now I know that each bus can contain 1+ channels based on how you define the StreamFormat for that bus.

So my question pertains to setting the crosspoint volumes (aka kMatrixMixerParam_Volume with kAudioUnitScropGlobal) and working with variable audio file types.  If you have a stereo file, thats cross points 0 and 1, then you connect a surround file with 6 outputs, so thats crosspoints 2-7 ...

There doesn't seem to be an easy way to calculate what the crosspoint in values are on the mixer based on the mixer bus a generator is connected to.  Is this just something I need to keep track of, or is there a better way that someone out there knows?

Thanks
