choosing hardware for audio

Dear List,

I have been having a discussion with a friend about how to choose the best machine for a DAW or playing virtual instruments.  As it progressed I realized I have a very limited understanding about the typical operations a dedicated audio system does compared to other systems like a database or video gaming system.

Could anyone help me to understand, or point me to a resource which explains what bottlenecks a DAW system might experience and how to choose hardware to maximize performance while minimizing cost?

Best,
Reid
