'aach' available but fails with format error

  • Subject: 'aach' available but fails with format error

On OS X 10.6, I call AudioConverterNew with an output format type of 'aach', (which is reported to be available by AudioFormatGetProperty function using the kAudioFormatProperty_encoders property type constant) and it fails with a format error.  If I do the same with an output format type of 'aac ', all is well.  I have tried various common sample rates and both 1 and two channels with the same result.  Both input and output sample rates and channel counts match, and on the input side, I'm using the standard floating point format.  What am I missing?

Thanks,
Ethan...
