useless side-note .... there has been at least 1 audio interface (the
Gravis Ultrasound) that used to generate an interrupt at 31.25kBaud.
you could use it to get absolutely perfect MIDI timing, corresponding
precisely to what the analog circuitry in front of the MIDI connector
did. I don't know why more companies didn't do this, and it could have
been improved a little by making the interrupt scheme more flexible,
but it certainly was a nice design (especially for the mid-90s).
