I don't think/know for sure if there are viable alternatives (afaik
Codewarrior on the Mac is no more?) and I'm not sure what the level of
support for KDE/Qt is on the Mac... everyone I know uses Xcode.
And yes, you're right, Xcode is a bit lacking in some areas. That's to
be expected if a company that is good at building computers insists on
developing the entire application ecosystem for it at the same time,
driving the key 3rd parties (Adobe, Metrowerks, Avid etc) out of the
market by removing their incentive to develop for their platform.
While you do get better integration and a more consistent workflow
this way, the lack of competition is always bad for the user. No
single company can provide the same quality as multiple, highly
specialized companies.
