coreaudiod daemon gone berserk in 10.72

I am not sure what exactly triggered this, but I am having major coreaudio problems in 10.72 … audiomidi setup just gives me a beachball and has to be force-quit. Many apps that use coreaudio still work, but a few such as MaxMSP and the finder- quicktime media preview are unusable. If I look in activity monitor, coreaudiod is using a massive amount of CPU. I have submitted a bug report but I thought I might ask here if anyone knew what could be happening.

thanks,

oli
