thanks a lot for offering your help. Really appreciate it.
After scrutinizing my code and comparing (again and again) with the ConvertFile example I realized that to convert Apple Lossless I have to read the MagicCookie from the source file and set it as property in the converter (with kAudioConverterDecompressionMagicCookie).
I had falsely assumed I only need that thing when actually writing to a file.
