yes, the only way to use QT32 in a 64 bit Cocoa app is to use a helper app. similarly, it is the only way to use QT32 to do compression on Windows, without blocking the main thread.
i was successful in using "boost::interprocess::shared_memory" to write a QT32 server for Windows, but the same code can be used for mac (since it uses boost, yay for cross platform code)
if you want some code snips of that to get you started let me know

I had exactly the same problem when I ported my app to 64-bit. Right now, I am being forced to use a 32-bit helper utility to open QuickTime files, due to the apparent lack of suitable API. Regards, Martin
