iphone hardware output sample rate

What is the actual physical output sample rate of iOS devices and can I influence it?
How can I tell what it is at runtime?

I have been using AudioQueues and when I initialize I can basically use whatever sample rate I want.
Is some kind of frequency conversion happening, or am I actually setting the rate of the DAC?
Sorry if this has been answered before. It seems like a simple question, but I couldn't find it anywhere.
