Hi Chris,

As you noted, ALAC is being offered under the relatively permissive Apache 2 license, which does include both express copyright and patent licenses (Sections 2 and 3 of the license, respectively).  We are not in a position to offer legal advice on your specific implementation though, so if you have a question about the scope of these licenses, and whether your use would be covered, please consult with your independent legal counsel.

Thanks for your interest in ALAC.

Bill

This is great news.  Thanks for passing it along to the list

I do have one question that haven't found an answer to: are there any patent-licensing or other encumbrances to using ALAC?  If I build a new product with this code, am I going to be on the hook for payments not because of the code (which is Apache licensed) but for the algorithms of the codec itself?

Thanks in advance to anyone who can answer this definitively.

The Apple Lossless Audio Codec (ALAC) is a lossless audio codec developed by Apple and deployed on all of its platforms and devices for some years now.  Apple is now making the Apple Lossless Audio Codec (ALAC) available as an open source project.

The source for both encoding and decoding is available under an Apache license.  The project also includes an example program to read and write ALAC data to/from a CAF (Core Audio Format) file and WAVE files.

Full details can be found in the Apple Lossless Audio Codec Project page on http://alac.macosforge.org

Thanks

Bill
