 Sorry for any imprecision. It's a AudioDeviceIOProc installed on the default input device, which generates callbacks like clockwork -- until the mousedown. I call it a "loop" because it is on its own CFRunLoop.
 BTW on my machine this dropped buffer phenom happens with the higher-level APIs as well. And, as best I recall, (it's been a while) this was not an issue prior to OS 10.6, when Apple lowered the thread type and priority of HAL.
