Yeah, perhaps! Core Audio is not necessarily Apple's strongest area, and certainly not its documentation.
Personally speaking though, I'm not that fussed - it's taken me a while to get here, but it mostly makes sense. Although why MultiChannelMixer's output bus has to be such a pain in the butt is beyond me.
