Changing the way the OS responds to a USB DAC

  • Subject: Changing the way the OS responds to a USB DAC

Hi,

This list was the closest I could find that applied to my pursuit, so
apologies if this is OT.

I have two DACs with USB inputs: a Beresford Caiman, and a Fiio E7.
When these are connected to either my Mac Pro (2010; 10.6.8) or
MacBook Pro (2011; 10.6.8) the system recognizes them automatically.
Neither of my DACs pays any attention to the System volume or balance
settings, accepting what I must assume is a line-level input.
However, unlike when I use the optical digital outputs on either of my
Macs, the OS does not disable the OS volume controls when the DACs are
connected.

I'd like to change that behaviour so that, when either of my DACs is
connected by USB, the OS volume controls _are_ disabled. I've found
what I assume is the relevant kext, but there appears to be no way of
modifying any of the files within to tweak any settings, and I'm in no
way capable of creating a custom driver.

Is there somewhere else in the OS that I can access the settings that
affect how the OS responds to different audio output devices?

S.
