Look at the source code for the AUEffectBase to see how this is implemented

i'm familiar with the specs.

my point was that the specs don't appear to provide a way to specify either of the two cases i was aking about. i know how to define "0..N" for input and output, and i know how to define "0..8" for input and "0..8" for output. but if i had a plugin that *must* have at least 1 input, or must have matched inputs and outputs, i can't see any way for the plugin to communicate that to the host.
