is there anything at a lower level than core audio on Mac OS?

Folks,

If I wanted to write an "audio device driver" for Mac OS X, is there a way to do it at a lower level than
Core Audio?

For example, I want the driver to appear as an input/output device in the control panel of the System Preferences,
then I'd want to have my own API to it.

Thanks,

- Nick
