Makes sense. In my case I stop playback whilst I do any recording (push
to talk type functionality). Most of the time the app is just playing.
Does anyone know if it's possible/advisable to switch the categories on
the fly?

IIRC, the play-out volume drops because once you start recording off the built-in mic (as opposed to headset), you're at risk of feedback.
