Multi-input audio unit - inBuffer.mNumberBuffers is always 2?

Hello,

I am building an audio unit with (>2) inputs with non-independent channel processing. I am overriding processBufferLists and am (or trying to) interleave and process all input streams there. It seems that when I configure AU Lab with >2 inputs and add my audio unit on the output channel, inBuffer.mNumberBuffers is always 2 no matter how I configure AU Lab. I am having trouble understanding how the host communicates the number of channels to the audio unit. Any insight here is much appreciated.
