I have seen/heard this on a MacBook Pro as well, it seems to be to protect the speakers from excessive volume or clipping. Occasionally I have noticed it fall back to mono through the "subwoofer" which is also in there apparently (within the constraints of the available space).
I've not witnessed the headphone or optical output behave in the same way. It isn't always necessary for the protection to kick in after having disconnected the headphones.
