m4a metadata

Can metadata be applied to an m4a file.  I’ve been doing some reading and I’ve gotten mixed information.
Mostly the information seems to suggest that there are no tags available by default while there are others that suggest metadata can be applied, although it is not standard.  I would like to apply information that is readable by iTunes that allows a list of information.  In my case, what I am looking to do would be equivalent to applying the song lyrics or something that is more than just a few characters of information to the m4a, so the information is transported with the file itself.
Can this be done?  If not, which lossless types might support a tag of this nature?

Thank you,

W.
